TFYP 02 | Get Detail Crazy

Posted on February 8, 2016 | 0 comments

If you’re planning a wedding, chances are you have peeked at Pinterest once or twice (ooorrr perhaps are currently living and breathing it). WHY IS PINTEREST SUCH EYE CANDY? It’s in the details, darling. If a tiny part of you (or everything inside of you) wants to create a celebration that could be passed around for Pinterest inspo, it’s time to get detail crazy.

The perfectly intricate flowers – both tiny displays and waterfalls of greenery, the chalkboards, the cute banners, lights falling from trees, mouthwatering dessert tables of stacked high Oreo’s and doughnut walls displayed for kings, candles eve-ry-where, and on and on you see themes being pinned and re-pinned. If it’s all a bit overwhelming, or you need a place to start, we’re sharing our 3 best tips for planning pin-worthy details below.

1. Streamlined decor

As a bride, when you think flowers for your wedding you think about your bouquet. A simple bouquet is completely beautiful and perfect in the right setting, but a cascading arrangement filled with greenery is even more eye-catching. Go a step further; when you adorn the entire reception venue with that same greenery you not only just took care of your table centerpieces, but you just tied in your bouquet with the reception decor causing for a streamlined theme that is sure to stand out in your photos afterwards. Have a bigger budget? Use your same arrangements to decorate the alter, your aisle, a getaway vehicle, or you could even follow Kimye’s lead and have an entire floral wall. Flowers are an easy way to streamline your decor, but if that’s not your jam, simply pick a theme (it can be as easy as “metallic” or as extravagant as “The Great Gatsby”) and incorporate bits of it into your entire day, start to finish, rather than just at your reception.

2. The little things matter

Imagine a dessert table with cupcakes and doughnuts stacked into intricate towers on top of rustic wood slabs or vintage metallic tins or even on rose-gold colored glass. Alongside them, shot glasses filled perfectly to the rim in various milk options. Now instead, imagine two cardboard boxes laid open, the same cupcakes and doughnuts inside, some tipped over, the frosting and glazes rubbed up against the sides of the box. A jug of milk and coffee cups next to them. We’re not saying one of these is the right way and one is the wrong way (hey, if cardboard boxes are your style – by all means!). But one of these is definitely pin worthy, because it called for a bit more attention and just a tad more planning. The little things really do matter when looking at your photos, from the way the room looks that you choose to get ready in (clean & tidy vs. clothes & breakfast plates scattered about, a dark space vs. a room flooding with light), to the handwriting on your chalkboard signs (find a friend who has great penmanship!), all the way to how you set up your dessert table.

3. Plan for light

The photos that are pinned the most on Pinterest usually have the very best lighting involved. A large reason for this is because the photographer knew what they were doing. A smaller reason – but maybe just as important – is because the person planning the day planned it around good lighting. When getting married outside, plan your “I Do’s” around golden hour (the hour or two before sunset, depending on your specific location), or choose to stand under a large shade-giving tree if you’re wanting an earlier ceremony. When decorating your reception space or an indoor ceremony, use twinkle lights, chandeliers, and candles upon candles. Bonus tip: don’t just assume what the light will be doing on your wedding day, visit your ceremony and reception locations beforehand and actually look at what the light is doing, where shadows form, how different weather might affect the light, and figure out when the sun disappears behind the horizon (hint: if there’s trees around, your light will change different than if on a body of water or in an open field). When in doubt, plan for light.
